The subject of the essay is Franz Kafka’s attitude to World War I presented in the personal writings (Dzienniki) and literary works (story Kolonia karna, Sprawozdanie dla Akademii, Schron and miniature Stara karta). The writer creates a double narrative of World War I: ascetic and devoid of emotion in Dzienniki and metaphorical and parabolic in the stories, presenting one of the most original literary response to the dramatic events of 1914–18.
