The author describes the history o f Skawina since the acquiring of a fundation privillege in 1364. At that time it was an architectural and craft centre. Because o f its location near the border as well as in order to shield Cracow, Skawina was fortified and the castle was erected. For nearly 600 years o f its history, Skawina was a wooden town, and only in 20th century this kind o f construction was abandoned in favour of brick buildings. Between 1952 and 1957 the remains o f wooden constructions were examined, out o f which only about 10 buildings have been preserved till today. Basing on his examinations and on archival materials from 17— 19th centuries (pictures, plans, catalogues) the author states that old buildings o f Skawina displayed features which distinguished the town out of other „wooden” localities. This dissimilarity resulted partially from the region’s traditions. The „Skawina house” developed from a farmer’s house into a manor one. From the 18th century the house had a spatial and functional programme comprising — within a biway system — two rooms and an entrance hall. In the 19th century there emerged a system of two flats separated by a hall. This gave rise to a house with a ridge axial foundation and technically very simple. The author proposes to preserve the existing structure, which would involve the elaboration o f their full documentation and essential repairs.
