The article is deviated to problems of complex protection of cultural and natural environment of the Vistula valley on its ravined section between Płocka and Toruńska basins and in the region of the so-called Ciechocińska syimcliine. The problems were discussed when preparing a study on the renewal plan for Nieszawa, a historic small town complex situated on the Vistula at a distance of 30 kms from Włocławek and Toruń. Providing that problems 'Of renewal, anid of small town complexes in particular (if this is to be a continuous process arid operation with permanent effects) should be considered from the viewpoint of their regional connections (functional, spatial, transport), necessary studies have been made on several scales 'of spatial planning. As a result of this, a number of conservation conclusions have been formulated with regard to developmental plans for Włocławek and Toruń districts and local plans for Nieszawa. Some of them covered a find landscape of the river valley, integrally combined with the town. A( brief description of the method of the work has been illustrated with the drawings enclosed hereto. The recording and evaluation of the resources and values of the region under discussion made it possible to state that this is the area abundant in natural and cultural values. Here we can see a functionally and spatially clear-cut belt 'including Czerniewice — Otłoczyn — Nieszawa (with Ciechocinek, a health resort, in the central part) rich in mineral and saline waters. The most important events that are to take place in the future 'are: the construction of still another water- shed on the Vistula (between Nieszawa and Ciechocinek) with an international North — South motor- way running on the coping of the dam, construction of 'power station, cellulose and paper works and further development of industry in the neighbourhood of Włocławek. The implementation of the plans will affect adversely the ecosystem of the valley, deteriorate bioclimatic conditions of the Ciechocińska syncline and will cut a spa line with a high-way. The Conclusions drawn dn the work were as follows: — A development of the valley on the examined section may be realized only on the basis -of the conditions which should be precised in a study iof the landscape and iprovide for an expansion of protection zones for the spa. A course of motor-way should be moved behind a spa line. It is also necesSiairy to think over a possiblity of abandoning the idea of building a power station on this site. All elements of the dam and motor-way should be subordinated to natural values. Touristic roads linking individual localities and historic structures 'on the two banks of the river should be developed to enable a free contemplation of the landcape and to expose historic complexes situated on the edge of the valley escarpment. Apart from that Nieszawa should be entrusted with part of the functions of nearby Ciechocinek (provided transport connections are improved) and the function of touristic services in catering.
