Origins of early medieval Chełm, one of the most important centres of the Polish-Rus’ borderland, are still poorly recognised, in spite of a long history of excava- tion works. Cathedral Hill is a key spot on the map of the town and research on this place attracted much attention in the past. The author discusses guidelines of the most recent three-years program of interdisciplinary research that was initiated in spring 2010. Employees of various scholarly institutions participate in this program and the first season of field examinations yielded numerous interesting discoveries with regard to the ducal seat from the time of Roman of Galych. The seat originated most probably in the first half of the 13th c. This especially concerns perfectly pre- served remains of the circumferential masonry wall of the seat that was exposed in the course ofexcavations, as well as elements of a monumental entrance gate that was situated on its western side.
