Cars have the right to be called a cultural property — the Polish law of 1962 mentions means of transport amongst other objects of historic interest. Still, according to the author, the car occupies a special place on the list of technical monuments ; it has penetrated the life in this century so deeply that it has become a subject of interest not only to investigators of technics but also to sociologists, lawyers, aesthetes and other specialists. The car is the most complicated a_ticle for a personal use, offering the owner numerous experiences in the non-utilitarian sphere. Moreover, it presents a kind of mobile architecture of the interiors of streets and roads. Like in artistic culture, one can distinguish in cars styles, national shades, returns to old models and other features. The topic of cars has become recently a full-right branch of museology, collecting and antiquarian market. Further in the text the author describes activities of various clubs and associations organizing car events in Western Europe. The first meeting of motorization veterans in Poland was he'd in 1961. Since then both meetings, rallies and parades of old cars have become more and more frequent. The author expresses his concern about a too slow organization of a museum of old cars the idea of which was born in 1956. For the time, being, they are replaced by branch museums, e.g. fire-fighting. The author makes an analysis of the criterions employed in evaluating old cars and distinguishes two kinds: (1) criterions based on features typical of all copies of a given model, and (2) criterions based on features of a particular car. He then discusses different types of old cars found in Poland. Concluding, the author says that the right to protection should cover all old cars (time limit should be postponed as the years go). In this context it is necessary to prohibit their exportation abroad and to recognize officially old-car lovers as participants in the protection of technical monuments.
