In April 1986 Lublin played the host to the first meeting of the Soc ial Committee for the Renewal of Lublin M o n u ments. The participants discussed the work that had been done so far and presented a programme for conservation work to be undertaken in the area of the Old Town in the nearest future. The basis for all conservation work is a lo n g - term programme of rehabilitation drawn by the Atelier for the Conservation of Cultural Property (the PKZ) and based on earlier prepared scientific and historical documentation. The aim of the project is to preserve historic substance as well as the decor of interiors with a simultaneous change in functions and adjustment of buildings to needs of today. After the approval of the programme by the Praesidium of the Municipal National Council in 1972 vast research, planning as well a s building and conservation work was commenced on a broad scale. Following archaeolog ical and architectonic work a number of new sources for studies on the history of Lublin has been revealed. In some of the tenement houses fine wall polichromy, details of stone work and wooden ceilings were uncovered. All these objects have been subjected to conservation treatment. At the same time work has been also undertaken on a broad scale aimed at protecting cellars and underground corridors. Until now several old-town tenement houses have been put to the disposal of new users. This, however, is only the beginning of planned conservation work and a number of problems has still to be solved.
