One of main reserves of folk architecture in Slovakia is a mountaineers’ village of Osturńa, the largest village in Spiska Magura. Situated in a stream valley it has a loose chain construction running along the road over the stream for 9 kms. A characteristic feature is the division of land. Land belonging to one farm runs — as a long belt — from the middle of the valley on two sides upwards. Such a belt is locally called as "zarembok t- zarubok” . The basic constructional unit, i.e. a croft, has been preserved in few developmental forms ranging from an open croft built-up on two sides to an enclosed croft built-up on four sides. A spatial division of the Osturńan house is typical for a mountaineers' house in the Spisza region neighbouring Poland. Houses with a chipped construction were raised from beams chopped on both sides; semi-gable roofs with various proportions of the gable deflection were covered with shingle. Barns and farm houses are built in a similar technique and in the same material. Stone granaries and cellars raised opposite the croft, on the other side of the road, give the village a specific character. The subject of the protection in the reserve of Osturńa is a group of 84 crofts written in a state register of monuments. Further 50 crofts are the subject of interest to conservation services. The preservation of a settlement structure of the village, of individual crofts and an exceptional Osturńan type of the house decide of a unique character of the village on the territory of Slovakia. Wooden folk architecture of Osturńa and attractive landscape of Spiska Magura promote development of a recreative function of the village.
