Having its origin in North America, phlox paniculata (Phlox paniculata L.) is often grown in home gardens of Podkarpacie. Its popularity is so big that it can be called the basic perennial selection. Several factors contributed to this. Most importantly these are: ease in obtaining its seedlings, large decorative values and a tradition to cultivate this perennial. Phlox grown in those gardens come mainly from a neighborhood exchange. They are propagated by root cuttings. Thus, through a long and natural selection of phlox clones in the described region, ‘a local range of varieties’, well adapted to local environmental conditions, has been established. Moreover, a decorativeness of inflorescences and a long flowering period of these perennials (depending on variety lasting from 2 to 3 months) contributed to the fact that since the end of 19th century, phlox paniculata is widely planted at the front site of traditional rural gardens.
