The author of this paper attempts to analyse the range and the phenomenon of the end and the finiteness of our culture and its artefacts, which are differently depicted and demonstrated in Thomas Hettche’s novels, such as Ludwig muss sterben (1989), Die Liebe der Väter (2010) and the collection of riveting essays published as Totenberg (2012).32 The German writer inquires about the particular forms of a narrative as well as the function and placement of a narrator. In addition, the novelist elaborated a number of story-telling strategies, which allow him to present various modalities of remembering and conserving the past and to render it more reproducible as well. Besides, the author of the above-mentioned works underlines the special place of historical memory, which affects the way of perceiving the past not only by a single person, but also by imaginated communities with the awareness of self-finiteness. The renunciation of looking back and remembering would mean a considerable and deepest breach in the history of our civilization.remembering and conserving the past and to render it more reproducible as well.
