The following text discusses education in the spirit of tolerance and the question of tolerance in the multicultural societies. It stresses the importance of taking into account the historical context –specific social and cultural conditions – when considering the issue in question. Only then, such considerations may lead to the formulation of postulates allowing for the creation of the education process addressing the challenges of today’s world order. Tensions, conflicts and antagonisms faced increasingly often by multicultural societies point to the need of reviewing the currently applicable policy and education-related solutions. The ability to live among, not beside, other people must be considered one of the most signifi cant criteria for the peaceful coexistence of people, whereas development of the said ability must be treated as a fundamental educational task. For the process of integration obligates to search for the common good and common values, respected by everyone involved, notwithstanding the differences. The absence of such obligation may lead to the situation where the principle of tolerance ceases to serve as a guarantee of social harmony and peace.
