The article gives information on the technique and technology of contemporary works, obtained from some Warsaw painters such as Jan Trasin, Stefan Gierowski, Jerzy Tchorzewski and Zbigniew Makowski. Irrespective of the painting technique employed by individual artists, the information compiled makes it possible to define certain common points expressed by the painters: — The attitude of today’s painters to technology is lenient. On the whole they try to get adjusted to technological principles but only under the condition that they would not impede a free creative process. Still, whenever possible the artists aim at using materials of good quality (made by Rowney and Talens); they find deplorable a shortage of painting materials of good quality. — Varnish, which so far has played a protective role in painting, now has obtained a new quality. It has become a conscious artistic element. Therefore, the problem that gives rise to a number of doubts is the question of non-author’s varnishing of paintings (e.g. during conservation). Artists look at that problem in a very individual way. Because of a big difference of opinions in this respect, museums which purchase paintings by modern artists should ask them for detailed information on this subject. — In the case of the impairing of the structure of paintings artists do not want to take up conservation of their works. The procedures aimed at preventing the decay of pictures should be done by conservators. This applies also to stippling the missing parts of the painting layer.
