Major archaeobotanical investigations have been carried out over the past few years in the region of the early Polish state. Archaeobotanical data give an insight into the past flora and respectively to some plant associations and ecological conditions. Above all many remains of cultivated plans were discovered as well as those of potential use. They picture 11 - 12th c. plant economy including crops, gardening and exploiting vegetation otuside human habitations. In the presented article basic ecological conditions around the investigeted sites have been characterized. Tellmatic conditions of the western bridge remains deposition on Ostrów Lednicki are proven. The data obtained show limnic environment of layers accumulation at the Giecz site. Both sites yielded a very rich record of lake margin flora as well as adjacent areas . The extent of anthropogenic pressure on the landscape is evaluated. Among the finds of crop plants uncharred glumes of Panicum miliaceum dominate. Few carbonized remains of rye and wheat confirm their cultivation. Linum usitatissimum and Cannabis sativa are frequent. Corylus avellana, Rubus idaeus, R. caesius, Fragaria vesca, F. viridis were collected from the wild. Most likely apples and pears were gathered however they could have also been taken in cultivation.
