Whilst the design of the artificial terrain of the Racławice Panorama attempted to reproduce the artistic conception of the istaffage of the Lvovian panorama, lit did not constitute its faithful reproduction. The lack of suitable documentation and very fragmentary iconography on the subject were the reason. Thus, apart from .solving purely technical issues, if was necessary to supplement the existing form of documentation which comprised only initial sketches of the configuration of the terrain, the arrangement 'Of greenery and accessories, a general colour scheme of the foreground. Before the actual design work commenced, a model of the rotunda interior (1:20) had been made on which the dimmensional arrangement of the terrain in relation to the canvas could be .analysed. On the basis of photographs and preliminary conceptual work, an appropriate documentation was compiled for the reconstruction of the artificial terrain. The documentation consisted of, among other things, 4'7 cross-sections of the staff age configuration, views of fourteen fields corresponding to every segment (the technical layer, the layer of earth, the vegetation, 'the arrangement of accessories). The choice of a itechnological method was another matter. As the conditions of the Racławice Panorama display had changed fundamentally (a permanent exhibition) and the conservation had .became more demanding (almost a hundred years had passed since the picture was painted), the construction and maintenance of the artificial terrain were also affected. The principle issue was to eliminate biological life by use of appropriate chemicals. This is why the natural soil was replaced with ’’siporex” and foamed concrete, hardened with formaldehyde resin and coloured in the mass as well as on the surface with acrylic paints (Lascaux). The natural greenery remained but it will be treated with chemicals (sterilisation with 5% pentachloraphenod in TRI, .stabilisation in 20% Osolan KL or 5% solution of Paratroid in toluene). The accessories, which constituted the part of the Staffage, will be either regained or reconstructed according to the region and epoch of origin. In compliance with the foregoing principles, the artificial terrain of the Racławice Panorama w ill be based on a new technology ensuring its long life and appropriate artistic effects conjuring an illusion of three-dimmensiionality. The base will be a steel structure covered with corrugated sheet lined with suitably thick layer of „siporex” onto Which foamed concrete will be cast. The terrain thus prepared will ibe furnished with greenery and accessories, which will be artistically retouched. The artificial terrain ≪as a whole is not only supposed to en chance dimmensional perspective of the canvas, the main element of the rotunda interior, but it also has hydrophobic properties, it can hamper biological life .and finally, with the passage of time it should retain the fresh colouring of the whole foreground. Undoubtedly, such .an extensive programme would have been impassible to execute, had it not been for the participation of specialists in chemistry, .building technology .and plant technology. The present conditions, the foresight of the conservators and the user, and mast of all the opinion of the future viewers combined to produce such an approach.
