This article attempts to crystallize the image of women in the context of modernization of society at the time of the Bulgarian National Revival. Women, their beauty and erotic impulses are, at the beginning of the national movement, associated with the conventions of apatriarchal society, which is based on amedieval worldview. Approach to eroticism, pleasure and the ideal of female/male attractiveness during the “long” 19th century was gradually changing. This article therefore aims to interpret the outlined themes in several planes of Bulgarian National-Revival-discourse. It points out two fundamental female models in the literature of the Bulgarian National Revival: on the one hand, the image of Mother Bulgaria (“Mati Bolgaria”), on the other hand — princess Rayna (“Rayna knyaginya”). Their semiotic interpretations emphasize the dialogue with fine art. The paper in this sense observes the images of women in the paintings of Georgi Danchov and Nikolay Pavlovich.
