Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza filologiczna opisów śmierci i umierania w medytacjach zakonnych. Przedmiotem badań uczyniono siedemnastowieczne rękopiśmienne teksty medytacji, których autorkami są siostry benedyktynki i które przechowywane są w archiwum opactwa św. Wojciecha w Staniątkach. Analiza leksyki dotyczy takich obszarów, jak: nazywanie śmierci, cechy śmierci, uczucia towarzyszące myśleniu o śmierci, przygotowanie do śmierci oraz powoływanie się na autorytet. W analizach uwzględniono także najważniejsze informacje dotyczące grupy społecznej, jaką są siostry zakonne, i ich języka. Przeprowadzona analiza pokazuje, że postrzeganie śmierci w trakcie formacji zakonnej jest kształtowane niemal na nowo, czego główną przyczyną są stawiane przed zakonnicą cele (głównie dążenie do świętości). Zatem zakonnica przede wszystkim winna dążyć do tzw. śmierci świętych i wypracowywać pewnego rodzaju obojętność na śmierć.

The aim of this article is a philological analysis of the descriptions of death and dying in religious meditations. The subject of the research are seventeenth-century meditation manuscripts, authored by nuns from the order of Benedictine sisters which are kept in the archives of the abbey of St. Wojciech in Staniątki. The analysis of lexis refers to such areas as: naming death, traits of death, feelings accompanying thinking about death, preparing for death and invoking authority. It also includes the most important information about the social group of nuns and its language. The conducted analysis shows that the perception of death during religious formation is shaped almost anew, the main reason being the goals set for the nun (mainly the pursuit of holiness). Therefore, the nun should first of all strive for the so-called death of saints and work out some kind of indifference to death.
