The report contains the history o f rescuing one of the buildings in a Bulgarian town of Kiustendil. The building (erected in 1907) did not distinguish itself with its a rc h itectural value. But fo r the inhabitants it had other value: it was a specific kind o f „th e signal of memory” . In the epoch o f Turkish slavery it played the role o f „th e house of culture” , and thus it was a symbol of national id e n tity. In town reconstruction plans from 1982 the building was earmarked fo r demolition. It was then th a t the in h a b itants came out in favour of its protection. Their obstinacy and consistent a ttitu de brought about a change in the plans of town's reconstruction and a rescue of the building. Detailed studies have revealed the existence of many interesting historic structures that deserve their preservation. The examples discussed proved that the care to preserve old structures with controversial values may result in a total change of opinions on the question of reconstruction and arrangement of town's land. Still, of greatest importance is the attitude of inhabitants. It is them and not the specialists who sent „the signal” of memory on a historic town and brought about a process of town's reconstruction.
