The Polish 1962 law on the protection of cultural property and on museums has extended the notion of a historical monument to incorporate also works of engineering. So far the attention of the offices for the protection of monuments has concentrated mainly on monuments of industrial architecture. Mobile works of engineering are under the protection of specialistic museums, which out of necessity have to make a careful choice in this respect. It is well-known that a large number of works of art of this kind are outside museums. Industrial civilization has produced and is still producing such a variety of machinery and technical equipment, v a rious kinds and types, models and variants that in the author's opinion organizations engaged with monuments protection will never be able to give the same care to mobile monuments of engineering as it gives to works of fine and crafts arts. The main obstacle on this road is an insufficient number of specialists and difficulties flowing from a dissimilarity of conservation problems. The author brings the attention to a new meaning of the notion of authencity with regard to technical monuments. A work of engineering in which missing parts have been replaced with genuine spare parts does not lose its values of an authentic object. Along with the recognition of machines and motor vehicles as historical monuments, this notion has acquired new attributes, namely work and movement. And this leads to an inevitable wear. The author gives the example of a cylinder head of the motors of BMW 328 cars from 1937—39, which although they are valuable antique specimen, nevertheless they still participate in races of ancient cars. In order to ensure further efficient performance of the cars, BMW Veteranen-Club Deutchland has undertaken the task to manufacture a limited number of exact copies of the head. This example shows that a monument of engineering maintained in a working condition exists thanks to specific metabolism. Another characteristic feature of monuments of engineering is the fact that they may be properly maintained by every man who has some mechanical abilities and who has an understanding and respect for the values of an authentic work, is obstinate in trying to get genuine spare parts, knows well the structure and mode of action of the objects he is interested in. In this way tens of thousands of various monuments of engineering all over the world are protected by amateurs operating either individually or associated in clubs, associations, et.c. According to the author lovers of old engineering, engaged with collecting and maintaining its monuments, should be officially recognized as an element of the system of the protection of cultural property as well as an element assisting in an essential way in solving the problem of care over mobile monuments of engineering.
