In the paper the World Conference on Higher Education held in Paris in 2009 is discussed. Firstly the author presents conference objectives, leading themes, sessions and round tables discussions. Then she focuses on directions from two reports: “Trends in Global Higher Education: Tracking an Academic Revolution” and “Bucharest Message to the 2009 World Conference on Higher Education – Experiences and Recommendations from the Europe Region”. She points to main problems of higher education institutions in global and European context. In the end she analyses those problems from Polish higher education institutions’ point of view. She asks questions to be answered and underlines actions to be taken in order to deal with such problems as: access to higher education, marginalized groups in higher education, academic conditions for lifelong learning, quality assurance, financing higher education, relations between public and private higher education institutions.
