The article deals with restoration issues of the mining settlement of the ,,Rymer" mine in R yb n ik -Niedobczyce from the b e ginning of the 20th cent. The first housing in this settlement was put up in 1 8 9 8 , the last structures were completed in 1 9 14. The houses were built in accordance with the designing principles generally accepted at the time. These new additions to the town landscape were of an extensive nature, with gardens set up between the houses. The architectonic form and detail were in agreement with the architectural style of the times. Apart from the dwelling houses, there was also a store, a laundry, a public house and lodging facilities. Because the construction work extended over a long period of time, no functional communication system or common greens were planned. The area, however, was shaped harmoniously. In the 19 70's, due to the great housing shortage in Poland, there was rapid development of large-form housing. The situation was similar in Niedobczyce. Large new structures began to replace the old ones (some of which were taken d ow n ) New tall buildings were raised among the old houses. The problem arose of reconciling the postulates for protection of the cultural heritage with the needs of the inhabitants who demanded modern-standard housing. In 1 9 8 7 the Wrocław Technical University made out an exper tise report and determined the zone of conservation protection On the recommendations of the report (to raise the housing standard, to introduce a new architecture that shall nevertheless operate with the old forms, to correct the post-war architectural forms), a team of architects from the Institute of History of Architecture, Art and Industrial Technology of the Wrocław Technical University worked out a functional town-plan nin g concept and prepared a study of the restoration of the settle ment. This project was guided by the principle of creating an internally compact environment. The form of the new archi tecture was described, as were the manner of adapting the buildings of the 1 9 7 0 s and the restoration of historical objects
