Sweden possesses a number of collections of diplomatic records from the Ottoman and Crimean Tatar rulers; the great part of them is kept in the National Swedish Archives and the Swedish Military Archives. Numerous Ottoman and Tatar official diplomatic letters are related to Poland and Muscovy. During the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, Sweden, Poland and Ottoman Empire were keenly interested in constructing alliances against their enemies, especially against the new powerful state, Muscovy. There exists also a number of documents and transcripts of documents which found their way to Sweden as booty. These collections are called Extranea Collections. Among them there are records from the chancelleries of the Polish kings, concerning the Polish diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate. There are also other categories of archival documents, the remarkable letters written by private persons and highly interesting manuscript maps, which could be included within the field of both Oriental and Polish studies.
