The main aim of this article is to use the Törnquist curve to show the share of expenditure for culture, recreation, hotels, cafés and restaurants (so-called higher-level goods) in all expenditure in Poland in the year 2000. The research is based on data gained from the household budgets and refers to six socio-economic groups established. Moreover, the curve is also calculated for the group of all households. To estimate the parameters of the curve we use two methods: the first is based on linearisation of the original Törnquist function and the second is grounded on the three points method. In virtue of the results we can say that the share of expenditure for the considered goods fluctuates from 2,1% (households of employee-farmers) to 3,6% (household of employees) while the rate for all households is equal 3,0%. The lowest level of income when expenditure for higher-level goods appears oscil-lates from 48 PLN per capita (households maintained from non-earned sources) to 171 PLN per capita (households of retirees and pensioners). In the case of all households it is equal 117 PLN per capita. (original abstract)
