Ostatnie stulecie to okres głębokich, demograficznych zmian w Polsce. Starzenie się ludności – czyli wzrost odsetka osób mających przynajmniej 60 lat – jest spośród nich najważniejszą. Proces ten jest szczególnie widoczny w przypadku Łodzi. W XIX wieku i pierwszych dwóch dekadach wieku XX struktura wieku ludności Łodzi była bardzo młoda, głównie dzięki napływowi imigrantów, którzy odmładzali populację. Po roku 1930 starzenie się ludności stało się faktem odznaczającym się dużym przyspieszeniem w okresie powojennym. Jako rezultat bardzo niskiej dzietności i spadającej atrakcyjności miasta jako miejsca osiedlania się w trakcie ostatnich trzech dekad Łódź stała się miastem o prawie najwyższym poziomie zaawansowania starzenia się ludności wśród tzw. wielkich polskich miast (Warszawa, Kraków, Poznań, Wrocław). Niniejsze studium ukierunkowane jest na przedstawienie, jak w trakcie XX wieku przejawiał się proces wzrostu odsetka osób starszych w największych polskich miastach, przy czym szczególna uwaga położona została na relacje międzypokoleniowe oraz na tzw. proces podwójnego starzenia się ludności.

Last hundred years is a period of very profound demographic changes in Poland. Population ageing – i.e. shift in age structure of population resulted from increase in proportion of the aged 60+ – is the most important among them. The demographic process is especially visible when case of Łódź is under study. In the 19th century and in the first two decades of the 20th century age structure of the Łódź inhabitants was extremely young due to immigrants inflow which rejuvenated the population. After 1930 the ageing were a fact with acceleration in the post-war period. As a consequence of very low fertility and decreasing attraction of the city as a settlement place in the last three decades Łódź is almost the most advanced in the population ageing in comparison to the other biggest Polish cities (Warsaw, Krakow, Posen, Wroclaw). The study is aimed at presentation how in the 20th century the population ageing in the biggest Polish cities manifested with special attention paid to issues of intergenerational support and to the so called double ageing.
