Otyłość prosta jest chorobą przewlekłą, której powikłania mogą doprowadzić do obniżenia jakości oraz skrócenia długości życia. U dzieci jest rozpoznawana, gdy wartość wskaźnika masy ciałajest powyżej 97 centyla. Dane epidemiologiczne wskazują na stały trend przyboru masy ciała w polskiej populacji pediatrycznej. Obecnie około 20% dzieci ma otyłość, jeszcze większą grupę stanowią jednostki z nadwagą. Postrzeganie otyłości znacząco zmieniło się na przestrzeni wieków. W prehistorii uznawana była za oznakę dobrobytu i zdrowia, w kolejnych epokach stała się dodatkowo elementem pożądanym, ze względu na implikacje z wysokim statusem społecznym. Z biegiem czasu zaczęto dostrzegać jej negatywne skutki, by pod koniec XX w. uznać otyłość za jednostkę chorobową. W literaturze medycznej o powikłaniach zdrowotnych otyłości zaczęto szczegółowo pisać już w XVIII w., zaliczając do nich między innymi: puchlinę wodną, podagrę, bezdech senny i apopleksję. Obesity defined as chronic disease with a lot of complications can lead to shortening life expectancy and decreased quality of life. In pediatric group of patients is recognized when body mass index is above 97 percentile. Epidemiological data show increasing tendency to gain weight in the population of Polish children. Now about twenty per cent of kids suffer from obesity, however, overweight is more common. Over the centuries, perception of obesity has changed significantly. In ancient civilizations obesity was associated with welfare and health. Furthermore, in the pre-modern era it has become something desirable, a manifestation of high social status. With the progress of medicine, doctors perceived its negative influence on health. In the eighteenth-century medical literature health complications of obesity were described, for example: gout, sleep apnea, apoplexy and dropsy. In the second half of the last century obesity has been recognized as a disease. Changing views and interpretations of obesity influenced art pieces, especially paintings.
