: This is a review article on the history of psychopharmacotherapy. For a very long time, persons with mental disorders have been stigmatizing in all societies. Early attempts to treat mental illness by different medications were not effective. Only the development of psychopharmacology allowed to use specific substances against particular disorders. Since the mid-20th century lithium compounds have been the psychopharmacological standard to which all new normothymic drugs are compared. Lithium compounds are used to treat bipolar affective disorder, because they are acting on both maniacal and depressive states. Placing the lithium compounds on the pharmaceutical market was controversial for scholars in the past. On the one hand, they are effective in preventing suicide and recurrences of the disease, on the other, adverse effects may deter patients.
