One of the more impressive buildings in the center of Grudziadz, located at the market square on its northern edge, the former Korzeniewski Brothers’ Department Store was renovated in 2011. During the renovation the original level of the basement was lowered, and a number of artifacts of varying chronology and purpose, from pre-historic to modern times, were recorded in the removed layers of rubble and earth. Some of the found objects went to the Museum in Grudziadz, while a large part was destroyed. Invaluable sources both movable and immovable, consisting of remains of stone and brick foundations of underground tenement buildings from before the construction of the Department Store, including what was probably an urn grave of the Lusatian culture from the turn of the Bronze and Iron Ages, were irretrievably lost.
