The article deals with the method of investigation of the synonymy in Polish dialects. The examples of dialectal synonyms are taken from the Marian Kucała “Słownik porównawczy trzech wsi małopolskich” [The comparative dictionary of three Little Poland villages], Kraków 1957, (the three villages: Więciórka – the native village of Kucała; Sidzina; Facimiech), and from the “Słownik gwar polskich” (Polish Academy of Sciences), Kraków 1977–2014 (as well as from the manuscriptal card index of this dictionary). It appears that some synonyms of the word mówić [to speak] function only in the speech community of Więciórka dialect, while other synonyms function in the larger speech communities, which contain; a) the part of Little Poland dialect; b) the whole Little Poland dialect; c) the Little Poland and Silesia dialects; d) all Polish dialects; e) all Polish dialects and Polish standard language. The conclusion: the functioning of dialectal synonyms should be investigated in the speech communities of the particular dialects, not in the dialects taken as a whole.
