An issue that constantly raises questions and doubts is death and the process of the person’s dying preceding it. Everyone wants to die “well”, that is, happily, calmly and with dignity. This human desire was expressed by the ancient Greek term “euthanasia”. In today’s times of dehumanization and technicization of good and dignified medicine, death is understood differently. Above the principle of the sanctity of life, what counts is its quality and the freedom to decide about it. Faced with these challenges, the Church reminds in the published letter Samaritanus bonus that contemporary moral problems related to the end of human life must be looked at in the spirit of the Gospel, in terms of personalism and traditional Hippocratic ethics, emphasizing and protecting the value of every human person. An example of a Samaritan ser¬vice to the dying is Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Her experience shows that today it is necessary to return to the original understanding of the concept of “euthanasia” that can be achieved through palliative care, for “mercy killing”, in which showing mercy involves deliberately killing patients, does not solve the problem of “good” dying.

Das Thema, das ständig Fragen und Zweifel aufwirft, ist der Tod und der ihm vorausgehende Sterbeprozess. Jeder möchte "gut" sterben, das heißt glücklich, ruhig und in Würde. Dieser menschliche Wunsch wurde durch den altgriechischen Begriff „Euthanasie“ ausgedrückt. In der heutigen Zeit der Entmenschlichung und Technisierung guter und würdevoller Medizin wird der Tod anders verstanden. Über dem Prinzip der Heiligkeit des Lebens zählt seine Qualität und die Freiheit, darüber zu entscheiden. Angesichts dieser Herausforderungen erinnert die Kirche in dem veröffentlichten Brief Samaritanus bonus daran, dass die heutigen moralischen Probleme im Zusammenhang mit dem Ende des menschlichen Lebens im Geiste des Evangeliums im Sinne des Personalismus und der traditionellen hippokratischen Ethik gesehen werden müssen, wobei der Wert jedes einzelnen betont und geschützt wird menschliche Person. Ein Beispiel für einen Samariterdienst für Sterbende ist Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Ihre Erfahrung zeigt, dass es heute notwendig ist, zum ursprünglichen Verständnis des Begriffs „Euthanasie“ zurückzukehren, das durch Palliativmedizin erreicht werden kann, denn „Gnadentötung“, bei der Barmherzigkeit die vorsätzliche Tötung von Patienten beinhaltet, löst das Problem nicht Problem des "guten" Sterbens.

Zagadnieniem, które ciągle rodzi pytania i wątpliwości, jest śmierć oraz poprzedzający ją proces umierania osoby. Każdy chce umrzeć „dobrze”, czyli szczęśliwie, spokojnie i godnie. To pragnienie człowieka wyrażał starożytny, grecki termin „eutanazja”. W dzisiejszych czasach dehumanizacji i technicyzacji medycyny dobra i godna śmierć jest rozumiana inaczej. Ponad zasadą świętości życia liczy się jego jakość i wolność decydowania o nim. Stojąc wobec tych wyzwań, Kościół przypomina w opublikowanym liście Samaritanus bonus, że na współczesne problemy moralne, związane z końcem życia ludzkiego, trzeba spojrzeć w duchu Ewangelii, w ujęciu personalizmu i tradycyjnej etyki hipokratejskiej, akcentując i chroniąc wartość każdej ludzkiej osoby. Przykładem samarytańskiej posługi wobec umierających jest doktor Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Jej doświadczenie ukazuje, że konieczny jest dziś powrót do pierwotnego rozumienia pojęcia „eutanazji”, które można osiągnąć przez opiekę paliatywną, albowiem „zabójstwo z litości”, w którym okazanie miłosierdzia wiąże się z rozmyślnym uśmiercaniem pacjentów, nie rozwiązuje problemu „dobrego” umierania.
