The article looks at the issue of the so-called cryptocurrencies, which are one of the main determinants influencing the functioning of contemporary monetary systems. It is an instrument widely used by financial investors. Due to their advantages they are often seen as the currency of the future. On the other hand, there are numerous controversies related to cryptocurrencies, mainly regarding their legal status and conceptual difficulties. The aim of the article is to elaborate on cryptocurrencies: their definitions, main features, and methods of creation. Next, some possible applications and their advantages and disadvantages, are discussed.
