Fantasy though being a fictional literary genre often contains elements from the real world and different cultures. In texts written by popular authors we can notice usage of the cultural codes  in order to make characters, plot or fictional world more probable. One of the elements of the code which is commonly used in fantasy novels are elements of folklore or folk beliefs present in a particular region. On the one hand, they make a text more interesting for the reader, and on the other, names of legendary characters or local superstitions can create a significant obstacle for a translator, who will look for specific translational strategies. One of authors using elements of the cultural code in his books was Terry Pratchett. This can be observed especially in his series “The Discworld”. In this article some problems connected with elements of folklore and translational strategies will be presented on the example of extracts of the “Discworld” novels.

Literatura fantastyczna, choć z zasady egzomimetyczna, wielokrotnie sięga po elementy pochodzące z realnego świata i różnych kultur, a w tekstach znanych autorów daje zauważyć się wykorzystywanie kodu kulturowego do uprawdopodobnienia opisywanych historii, bohaterów oraz świata przedstawionego. Jednym z chętnie wykorzystywanych aspektów kodu kulturowego w fantastyce są elementy folkloru oraz wierzeń obecnych w danej kulturze i utrwalonych w używanym przez wspólnotę języku. Chociaż czynią one tekst bardziej interesujący, referencje do baśniowych postaci czy ludowych czarów mogą stanowić istotną przeszkodę tłumaczeniową, a rozwiązanie takiego problemu będzie wymagało szczególnych strategii translatorskich. Jednym z autorów sprawnie operujących kodem kulturowym w swoich dziełach był Terry Pratchett, co jest szczególnie widoczne w jego cyklu książkowym „Świat Dysku”. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest pokazanie, jak w wybranych pozycjach z serii „Świat Dysku” funkcjonują referencje do folkloru, jaką rolę pełnią oraz prezentacja problemów i strategii obecnych w polskim przekładzie powieści wchodzących w skład cyklu.
