The Diocesan Archive in Pelplin was established, as a research institution, on 1 April 1928 by Bishop Stanisław Wojciech Okoniewski. The archive was called the Archive of the Diocese of Chełmno until 1992, and after 25 March in the same year the name was changed into the Diocesan Archive in Pelplin as a result of the reorganization of the Catholic Church in Poland, according to the directives included in the bull Totus Tuus Poloniae Populus issued by John Paul II. As a consequence, the diocese of Chełmno was liquidated; and most of its area was included in the diocese of Pelplin and a new diocese of Toruń. The Diocesan Archive in Pelplin became an important research centre in Pomorze. Its aim was to gather, preserve, describe archival material of historical value and make it available to those who need it. This archive contains an old rich archival collection useful for studying the history of the diocese as well as the social, economic, cultural and political history of the region. Rev. Paweł Piotr Panske (1928-1936), who was appointed the first archivist, began inventorying the diocesan archive with a view to revealing the hidden treasure and making it available to all researchers. The following directors were his successors respectively: Rev. Antoni Liedtke (1936-1962), Rev. Edmund Piszcz (1962-1985) and Rev. Anastazy Nadolny (from 1 February 1985). The custodians were as follows: Rev. Kazimierz Dąbrowski, (1954-1984), Zbigniew Czerwiński (1986-1989), Rev. Jan Doppke (1989-1990) and Rev. Wojciech Kasyna (1985-2015). As an interest in the collection of the archive (especially in register books) grew, two new archivists were employed: Sławomir Linda (2003-2005) and Iwona Cylman (from1 January 2006).
