Fulfilling roles by women with intellectual disabilities. Focus research report

The issue of femininity in the context of intellectual disability has gained little attention in the literature so far. The paper focuses on the roles of females as described by female self-advocates with intellectual disabilities. The author presents a research report from a study conducted with three groups of females who took part in focus interviews (a total number of participants – 21 women aged of 21-60). The main research question was: what are the experiences of female self-advocates with intellectual disabilities in the context of fulfilling gender roles? The findings show that femininity is strongly associated with fulfilling certain social roles, e.g. a partner/wife or a mother. The participants distinguish a number of such roles which can be divided into available (fulfilled and not fulfilled by them) and unavailable to them. It is plausible that  a high awareness of feminine social roles as well as believing in own capacities to fulfill them results from the women’s participation in self-advocacy groups.

Temat kobiecości w kontekście niepełnosprawności intelektualnej nie zyskał dotychczas w literaturze przedmiotu dużej uwagi. Artykuł ten koncentruje się na rolach kobiet zaprezentowanych z perspektywy kobiet – self-adwokatów z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną. Autor przedstawia raport z badań przeprowadzonych w trzech grupach kobiet, które wzięły udział w wywiadach fokusowych (liczba uczestniczek – 21, wiek – 21–60 lat, niepełnosprawność intelektualna – od stopnia lekkiego do umiarkowanego). Główny problem badawczy brzmiał: jakie są doświadczenia własne kobiet self-adwokatów z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną w kontekście pełnionych ról związanych z płcią? Wyniki pokazują, że kobiecość jest silnie wiązana z wypełnianiem określonych ról społecznych, np. partnerki/żony czy matki. Uczestniczki wyróżniają różne role, przy czym można było dokonać ich podziału na dostępne (tutaj wyodrębniono role wypełniane i niewypełniane przez uczestniczki) i niedostępne dla badanych kobiet.
