W latach 1989–2010 powstały w Polsce 82 miasta. Nowo utworzone miasta mają znaczący udział w miejskiej sieci osadniczej kraju, gdyż stanowią 9,0% ogółu miast Polski. Badaniem objęto małe miasta, liczące do 20 tys. mieszkańców. Podstawę analizy stanowią wyniki badań ankietowych, które przeprowadzono w małych miastach powstałych w latach 2009–2010. Respondenci reprezentowali instytucje administracji publicznej, szkolnictwo różnego poziomu, organizacje i stowarzyszenia społeczne, sportowe, kulturalne i religijne. Celem opracowania jest próba odpowiedzi na następujące pytania poznawcze: 1. jakie są pozytywne i negatywne cechy wyróżniające miasta, 2. jakie jest znaczenie miast dla najbliższego otoczenia, 3. jaka jest przyszłość miast i co stanowi szanse ich dalszego rozwoju?

In the years 1989–2010 a total of 82 small towns appeared in Poland. The newly formed towns contribute significantly to the country’s urban settlement system since they account for 9.0% of all the Polish urban places. The research embraced small towns of up to 20 thousand population. It involved a survey analysis carried out in those established in the years 2009–2010. The respondents represented public administration institutions, schools of a variety of levels, as well as social, sporting, cultural and religious organisations and associations. The aim of the study was to seek an answer to the following cognitive questions: (1) What positive and negative features distinguish the towns? (2) What is the significance of the towns for their immediate surroundings? and (3) What is their future and what is their chance for further development?
