Michael Brennand-Wood regards himself as an independent explorer of visual territories. There are two ongoing spatial considerations in his practice, the spaces within and the spaces between. He has always been drawn to the border areas, the margins between disciplines, the points at which ideas overlap, blurring distinctions as to whether it’s a textile or sculpture, applied or fine art piece. Definitions of an area’s ideology are often a form of protectionism and control; he belongs firmly to the what if school of thought. The relationship between music and rhythm, has been a constant source of fascination in his work. His works recognized no hierarchy of materials; his visual language is a synthesis of painterly, sculptural and stitched traditions.
