CELTIC WAR-GODDESSESA very interesting feature in the Celtic religion is that a war deity is feminine. The Irish goddesses of war form a distinct group of warriors. Quite interesting is their appearance and the type of weapons they use, as well their connection with water and fertility. There is actually nothing mentioned about a god of war in the Irish literature, although we do have epigraphic and iconographic materials from Britain and Continent which could be considered as an evidence for the war god. The figures of the war-goddesses, as well other female deities that play prominent roles in the Celtic mythology give us a picture of a Celtic woman and indicate her high position in the Celtic society. We can also see that the warlike propensity is remarkable among Celtic women. Both ancient writers as well Celtic literature (here the author considers Irish literature) give us many examples of such heroines.
