The article describes the interactions between the human space and literature. Literary images of the city (Berlin, Amsterdam, Zagreb) represent the subject’s nostalgia, its longings and moods. In Ugrešić’s work the subject is a lost, lonely emigrant homo exul. The writer shows the reality from a “real-andimaginated” perspective. The urban setting is strange and deepens the alienation and loneliness. The nostalgic atmosphere comes from a longing for the motherland. The return to the motherland is impossible. In the works of Pavličić the return to the homeland is possible. The power of literary creation, memory and imagination renews the space of destroyed Vukovar. The writer uses enumeration and creates images of an unexceptional and magical city. The nostalgic discourse of Croatian writers is at the same time an identity discourse.

Artykuł omawia interakcje między przestrzenią ludzką (human) a literaturą. Literackie wizerunki miasta (Berlin, Amsterdam, Vukovar) reprezentują nostalgię podmiotu, jego nastroje i tęsknoty. W twórczości Ugrešić podmiot (subject) to zagubiony, samotny emigrant homo exul.. Moc kreacji literackiej, pamięć i wyobraźnia odnawiają (odbudowują) przestrzeń zniszczonego Vukovaru. Pisarz stosuje enumerację, tworzy wizerunki miasta zwykłego i miasta magicznego. Dyskurs nostalgiczny chorwackich pisarzy jest równocześnie dyskursem tożsamościowym.

The article discusses selected problems of the image, imagination and the ideological-aesthetic consciousness of the avant-garde in Croatian and Serbian literatures. Inspired by the ideas of modern Europe and opened to experiment, transgressions and mental function of the artistic language, it created an autonomous world of imagination. Utopian theories of reality evaluated from expressionistic conceptions of penetration of the world if matter and spirit, Earth and universe to surrealistic conceptions of over-reality.

In the article, the literary texts of the Croatian authoress are considered, since they present a critical comportment that is to remain in opposition to the crisis of the contemporary culture. The article makes an attempt to describe a specificity of the writer’s literary contestations, derived from a stance of the avant-garde and modern rebellion, adopted among others by Miroslav Krleža, and from an intellectual revolt, expressed by the postmodern aesthetics and philosophy. The growing on both contestation traditions determines a manner of thinking, perceptiveness of interpretation regarding the depicted world and life. The literary contestations of Ugrešić focus on problems of the postmodern aesthetics, ethics, sociopolitical and cultural transformations.

The  essay  titled  „Pursuing  the  Magic  of  Words  in  the  Twentieth-Century’s  Croatian  and Serbian Literature” discusses transformations of the awareness of the avant-garde and postmodernism  from  the  perspective  of  its  relation  to  magic  thinking.  The  essay  advances a vision of poetic language and the main figures of the avant-garde’s imagination, especially the aesthetic  conceptualizations  of  the  messianic  archetype.  The  avant-garde  thinking about  the world  of  unity  (of  the  world-man-language)  is  utopian  and  not  infrequently magic-esoteric. Postmodernism deconstructs symbolic language; it does not share the avant-garde’s belief in the existential and creative power of imagination and the word. The virtual culture of postmodernism reduces the value of the language sign and the referential function of language; it disenchants the conceits of the magic word.
