The object of this paper is compounds found in the novel Drzewiej (In the Old Days) by Władysław Orkan, such as przerwa-potok, that is pairs of hyphenated lexemes. I assume that the concentration of this type of linguistic means, elements of the artistic expression in a text with clearly modernistic linguistic and literary characteristics is a manifestation of a lexical and semantic game played consciously by the text sender and recipient. As a result of the analysis of the contexts in which individual compounds occur, semantics of the lexical units building structures, and with the use of the category of language-game, which was introduced to linguistics by Ludwig Wittgenstein and popularised, among others, by Ewa Jędrzejko, I made an attempt to identify the writer’s motivation to use such expressions. The interpretation of the linguistic material permitted the generalisation providing that compounds were applied for the purpose of building the mood and emotionality of the text, enriching the descriptions of the represented world, characterisation, and his text-forming strategies.

The cause and consequences of the genre heterogeneity of Władysław Orkan’s Listy ze wsi [Letters from the village] The subject of the article is the genre diversity of Władysław Orkan’s social texts published in the Polish press of the interwar period titled Letters from the village [originally: Listy ze wsi]. Thanks to the use of discursive analysis’ elements of press statements, attempts are made to determine the reasons for the polygence of Podhale’s eulogist’s journalistic texts. The genological complexity of Władysław Orkan’s analyzed texts was due to a number of factors related to the pragmatic and communicative situation, as well as to the author’s creative individuality. Hence, the smooth crossing of the boundaries of journalistic discourse in favor of its fictional counterpart became the reason for creating journalistic artistically signed texts, shaped in a particular way as a result of the author’s attitude, manifested in the care for readers’ satisfaction.
