The aim of the article is to investigate the question of shamanism among the Scythians on the basis of Herodotus’ description of the Scythian ritual purification. The presence of a shaman during the ceremony in the Scythian yurt is reconsidered pointing to an ambivalent approach in classical scholarship about his participation and doubts regarding probability of intoxication.
