In the text Iexplore the picture of the main characters old age. The question concerns possi­ble existence any difference between woman’s and man’s old age. There are two main characters, the older couple Maric who live on the nameless island what is the symbol of their loneliness and insulation, too. The picture of the old age is negative and pessimistic. It is connected with fear of death, dis­eases, boredom, powerless. The woman’s and man’s old age are really similar although Katarina submitted to aging when her husband needed more time. At first he was dissented at all. It is the theme of the most interesting text The old dog.

Heroji Ostrva su bračni par Marić, Ivan i Katarina, penzioneri koji žive na bezimenom ostrvu. Ostrvo simbolizira njihovu osamljenost iizolaciju od sveta. Slika starosti kod Selimovića definitivno je negativna; ona se veže sa strepnjom od smrti, bolešću, čamotinjom, osećajem uzaludnosti. Ženska imuška starost ne razlikuju se mnogo između sebe, slične su iako Katarina se lakše složi sa starošću, Ivan se početno buni intenzivno, zatim polako prihvata realnost. Otome se priča unajinteresantnijem delu knjige Stari pas.

The narrator of Crystal Gates who is the protagonist of the novel too is making areconstruction of his youth and the artistic life in Belgrade of the 1960s. As he said, he has seen the past “in the lucid intervals” and dreams are really important in the story. They are usually connected with the real life and sometimes they are a kind of vision. The most important themes of the novel are beauty and violence. They are still related to each other, because they are two points of human life in general. The narrator is abudding writer, earning his living by trading in works of art and moving in artistic circle. On the other hand, he gets into touch with the exponents of new authorities (communists) because they are interested in buying his works of art. His friend, Kosma, is acommunist, too. The novel’s world has adualistic nature and is marked by right and wrong (beauty and violence) at the same time.

Death, absence and loneliness: The motive of a traumatizing loss of a mother in the collection of stories Call me Esteban by Lejla Kalamujić Lejla Kalamujić (born 1980) is a Bosnian writer from Sarajevo and the author of two collections of stories: Anatomy of a Smile (2009) and Call me Esteban (2015). The paper presents the autobiographical stories collected in the second book, in which the most important theme is death, especially the premature death of a mother. The aim of the article is to show the motive of the loss of a mother. The writer uses first-person narration and the protagonist is a woman named Lejla, a type of alter ego for her. The stories are written from different points of view and from different time perspectives. The intertextual themes in the book are the most interesting ones and have real artistic value (there are references to be Almodóvar, Márquez, Kafka, Bishop, Miljkovic and others). The writer has a way of writing about the pain connected with death that is useful for experiencing belated mourning.

Smrt, odsutnost i samoća – motiv traumatizarijućeg gubitka majke u zbirci priča Lejle Kalamujić Zovite me Esteban Lejla Kalamujić (rođ. 1980) je sarajevska spisateljica koja je dosad objavila dve knjige pripovedaka: Anatomija osmijeha (2009) i Zovite me Esteban (2015). U centru pažnje ovog članka nalazi se njena druga knjiga i glavni motiv gubitka majke, dakle i majčinog odsustva u kćerkinom životu. Kalamujićeve kratke priče pre svega karakteriše autobiografizam, a jedna od njenih glavnih tema je smrt. Spisateljica koristi naraciju u prvom licu, narratorka se zove isto kao i ona, Lejla, zatim može se reći da je autoričin alter ego. Kalamujić opisuje svoja životna iskustva bez majke iz različitih vremenskih perspektiva, zbog čega u jednoj priči ponekad vidimo zajedno perspektivu devojčice i odrasle žene. Najinteresantnije teme u knjizi su intertekstualne (ima reference na Markesa, Kafku, Bišopa, Miljkovića i dr.) koje su pomoćna metoda pisanja o boli zbog smrti i korisne su doživljavanje zakasnele žalosti.
