The article focuses on the relationship with the past, which is seen from the point of view of the emigrant, both Russian and Jewish, and his complex identity. The analysis is done on the basis of Igor Guberman’s Diaries, in which an ambivalent attitude to the homeland is observed.

The aim of this article is to attempt to discuss the report of Yuliy Margolin from the Soviet Gulag. A Journey to the Land of Ze-Ka is an original work, written from the perspective of a prisoner, who is mostly an intellectual, a philosopher, an excellent observer and interpreter of European reality. The author of the article tries to prove that for Margolin the superior value in the Gulag is the mind, which wins over emotions and thanks to that allows to preserve dignity and humanity. The analysis of identity, carried out by Margolin, allows us to read his testimony in the context of contemporary identity research in extreme situations, where instead of building up our own self, we are fighting for our moral values. As it turns out, the basic foundation of identity is freedom. The article also undertakes a preliminary analysis of Margolin’s concept of hate as the most destructive force for the human individual and the intellect. The mind, according to Margolin, effectively defends freedom, and hate kills free thought, destroys goodness, and consequently leads to dehumanization. The research allows us to call Margolin a rationally thinking humanist, an intellectual who is against historical fatalism, who constantly analyses current events and human behaviour, without losing faith in the mind and the human individual.

This paper presents Professor Ryszard Łużny's research profile and his greatest achievements in the field of Slavic studies. Professor Łużny's autobiographic work and memories about him are the departure point for the article. The interviewed students, collaborators and friends of Professor Łużny paint a clear picture of an outstanding scholar, great event organizer and, first and foremost, of a great man. The article ends with a list of publications in memoriam Professor Łużny and the list of conferences organized by his students between 1997 and 2013 in Kraków and Lublin.

The objective of this research is to discuss the state of Russian studies in Israel. The area the study focuses on are the socio-political circumstances which have influenced the growth of the status of the Russian language, the dynamics of the decline of its attractiveness, and also the perspectives of maintaining interest in Slavic culture. This article gives the names of various Israeli Slavists and discusses their achievements in the field of Slavic research, as well as those factors which have narrowed their academic preferences. So far, the concern of Israeli Rusicists has been focused on the literature of the First Wave of Russian emigration. Recently, however, more and more frequently it refers to Russian literature in Jewish and Israeli contexts. The analysis conducted indicates that Russian studies flourished the most in the 1990s. In the 21st century, interest in Russian studies in Israel is decreasing due to a poorer knowledge of Russian language and culture among the younger generation of repatriated people, worldwide trends and the processes of globalisation.

Celem badań jest omówienie kondycji izraelskiej rusycystyki. W tekście wskazuje się uwarunkowania społeczno-polityczne, które wpłynęły na wzrost rangi języka rosyjskiego, omawia się dynamikę spadku jego atrakcyjności, a także perspektywy zainteresowania kulturą rosyjską w Izraelu. Autorka artykułu wymienia nazwiska izraelskich rusycystów i slawistów, omawia ich preferencje badawcze i osiągnięcia w zakresie światowych badań slawistycznych. Badania izraelskich rusycystów dotyczą przede wszystkim literatury pierwszej fali emigracji rosyjskiej. W ostatnim czasie coraz częściej podejmowane są prace nad literaturą rosyjską w kontekście żydowskim i izraelskim. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wynika, że rusycystyka w Izraelu najbardziej intensywnie rozwijała się w latach 90. W XXI wieku zainteresowanie rusycystyką w Izraelu spada ze względu na słabszą znajomość języka i kultury rosyjskiej wśród młodszego pokolenia repatriantów. Wpływ na ten stan rzeczy mają także tendencje światowe i procesy globalizacyjne.
