The work consists of two parts. In the introduction, I provided a short presentation of Rabanus Maurus’ biography. Next, I presented a short description of his homilies, while taking into account the tradition and the epochal context. In the last part of the introduction, I provided a short description of homilies which I have translated. In the homilies themselves, the author takes up the following themes: fidelity to the principles of the Christian religion, warning against giving in to pagan influences, explanation of the most important truths of the faith, reinforcing one’s own preaching by providing ample quotations from Sacred Scripture as well as making use of the Church Fathers’ writings. In his homilies, Rabanus Maurus takes up other themes as well, such as: warning against hunting and playing dice on holy days, forbidding conversations in church and work on holy days and requesting care for the poor and the blind. These issues which seems to be less important had a significant importance for the author’s contemporaries. In the annotations, I included the most important philological, theological, biographical and geographical observations which allow the reader to properly understand the context of the translated homilies.

Praca składa się z dwóch części. We wstępie krótko zreferowałem życiorys Rabana Maura, następnie opisałem jego homilie mając na uwadze tradycję oraz kontekst epoki. W ostatniej części wstępu krótko opisałem treść tłumaczonych przeze mnie homilii. W samych homiliach autor porusza następujące tematy: wierność zasadom religii chrześcijańskiej, przestrzega przed uleganiem wpływom pogaństwa, wyjaśnia najważniejsze prawdy wiary, umacnia własne przepowiadanie poprzez obfite cytowanie Pisma Świętego, a także korzystanie z dorobku Ojców Kościoła. W swoich homiliach Raban Maur porusza także inne tematy, takie jak: udziela przestrogi przed polowaniami i grą w kości w dni świąteczne, zakazuje prowadzenia rozmów w kościele oraz prac w polu w dni świąteczne, prosi o troskę o biednych i niewolników. Sprawy te, wydające się być mniejszej wagi, miały jednak istotne znaczenie dla współczesnych mu ludzi. W przypisach umieściłem najważniejsze uwagi filologiczne, teologiczne, biograficzne oraz geograficzne, pozwalające czytelnikowi właściwie zrozumieć kontekst tłumaczonych homilii.

The article provides an account of the building of one of the first Christian churches in ancient Rome – the Basilica of St. John Lateran – up until the year 455. It also presents the process of adapting the building to public use for Christians who came out of hiding after 313, and a description of the first basilica – Basilica Nova – which was used for sacral purposes in ancient Rome. Due to the limited size of the article, it intends to provide a concise presentation of the discussed theme.

Artykuł obejmuje opis powstawania jednej z pierwszych świątyń chrześcijańskich w starożytnym Rzymie – Bazyliki św. Jana na Lateranie do roku 455. Został w nim również zawarty proces adaptacji budynku użyteczności publicznej w Rzymie dla chrześcijaństwa, wychodzącego z ukrycia po roku 313 oraz opis pierwszej bazyliki wykorzystanej do celów sakralnych w starożytnym Rzymie, a była to Basilica Nova. Niniejszy artykuł jest jedynie zarysem podjętego przez autora tematu.

The Second Vatican Council formulated its ecclesiological teaching on the basis of the concept of communio. It involved turning to the Bible, the teaching of the Church Fathers and the liturgy. This choice resulted in a move away from the juridical language inherent in pre-secular ecclesiology to a religious language that drew concepts from the Bible and the teaching of the Church Fathers, thus emphasising their theological teaching. One of the extremely important Church Fathers writing in the golden age of theology was Jerome of Stridon. The teaching on the Church contained in his Epistles should be considered fromtwo aspects. First, the monk from Bethlehem is particularly sensitive to the emerging heresies, which he condemns extremely strongly, drawing attention to the threats to the unity of the Church. In the article, the heresy of Pelagianism is presented as an example. The second particularly valuable aspect of Jerome’s ecclesiology is his teaching on the Church based on the proper interpretation of Scripture. Exegesis is the main source of teaching about the Church. This teaching is deeply connected to Christ and to personal experience of faith. Stridonian gives his ecclesiology a Christological meaning, which bears the hallmarks of an eschatological Christology. An ecclesiology understood in this way, based on a correct interpretation of Scripture and pastoral care manifested in warning against the pernicious influence of heresy, is in line with the teaching of Vatican II.

Sobór Watykański II sformułował swoją naukę eklezjologiczną w oparciu o pojęcie communnio. Polegała ona na zwróceniu się w kierunku Biblii, nauczania Ojców Kościoła oraz liturgii. Wybór ten spowodował odejście od języka prawniczego właściwego dla eklezjologii przedsoborowej na rzecz języka religijnego, który czerpał pojęcia z Biblii oraz nauczania Ojców Kościoła, w ten sposób podkreślając ich nauczanie teologiczne. Jednym z niezwykle ważnych Ojców Kościoła tworzącym w złotym okresie teologii był Hieronim ze Strydonu. Naukę o Kościele zawartą w jego Listach należy rozpatrywać w dwóch aspektach. Po pierwsze, mnich z Betlejem jest szczególnie wrażliwy na powstające herezje, które niezwykle mocno piętnuje, zwracając uwagę na zagrożenia dla jedności Kościoła. W artykule, jako przykład została przedstawiona herezja pelagianizmu. Drugim, szczególnie cennym aspektem eklezjologii Hieronima jest nauczenie na temat Kościoła w oparciu o właściwą interpretację Pisma Świętego. Egzegeza jest głównym źródłem nauczania o Kościele. To nauczanie jest głęboko powiązane z Chrystusem oraz z osobistym doświadczeniem wiary. Strydończyk nadaje swojej eklezjologii znaczenie chrystologiczne, która nosi znamiona chrystologii eschatologicznej. Tak rozumiana eklezjologia, opierająca się na prawidłowym interpretowaniu Pisma Świętego oraz trosce duszpasterskiej przejawiającej się w przestrzeganiu przed zgubnym wpływem herezji wpisuje się w nauczanie Soboru Watykańskiego II.

Walka Hieronima z herezjami chrystologicznymi w świetle nauczania o Chrystusie zawartym w jego Listach

This article describes the Christological heresies found in the Epistles of St Jerome. These are Arianism, Apolinarianism, the heresies preached by the Ebionites and Nazarenes, the heresies professing Docetism and Pelagianism. In the heresies described, the Author of the Vulgate demonstrates not only doctrinal errors, but also defends the orthodoxy of the Christian faith in his writings. The article furthermore points out the important issues in Christology highlighted by the Monk of Bethlehem. It is mainly concerned with the confusion of concepts in Greek and Latin concerning the terms οὐσία and ὑπόστασις, the attempt to restore their proper meaning, the formation of the correct meaning and understanding of the term persona, the pointing out of the dangers of Pelagianism and the linking of it to earlier heresies in order to draw attention to its pernicious effects.

Artykuł opisuje herezje chrystologiczne występujące w Listach św. Hieronima. Są to arianizm, apolinaryzm, herezje, które głoszą ebionici i nazaretanie, herezje wyznające doketyzm oraz pelagianizm. Autor Wulgaty w opisywanych herezjach wykazuje nie tylko na błędy doktrynalne, ale również broni w swoich pismach ortodoksji wiary chrześcijańskiej. Artykuł wskazuje ponadto na istotne zagadnienia w chrystologii, na które zwrócił uwagę Mnich z Betlejem. Chodzi głównie o pomieszanie pojęć w grece i łacinie dotyczących terminów οὐσία i ὐπόστασις (spiritus asper), próba przywrócenia im właściwego znaczenia, formowanie właściwego znaczenia  i rozumienia pojęcia persona, wskazywanie na niebezpieczeństwa pelagianizmu oraz powiązanie go z wcześniejszymi herezjami w celu zwrócenia uwagi na jego zgubne działanie.
