In 1532 the Hieronim Wietor’s printing office in Cracow printed a book by Stanisław Kleryka (Stanisław of Bochnie, Anserinus) that could be used to play a variety of fortune telling games. The volume was composed of words and images – texts and woodcut illustrations. The present article analyses the functions these components were designed for in the whole structure of the work (and in its printed edition), and discusses the ways these components were used to create one’s own “lot book” or “book of fates”. Additional attention is given to the tradition of emblems and the heritage of the mediaeval allegorising that was heavily exploited in this Renaissance book of fates. By analysing the iconography of the woodcuts included in the Fortuna and the structure of the printed volume, an attempt is also made to position the Fortuna against early modern emblematic tradition or the so-called “emblematic mentality” of the epoch, which were clearly manifested in the set of author’s humorous predictions (as well as in the works of the cooperating woodcutter and printer in the printed rendition of the Fortuna).

W 1532 roku drukarnia Hieronima Wietora w Krakowie wytłoczyła Fortunę… Stanisława z Bochnie (Gąsiorka, Kleryki). Tom współtworzyły słowa i obrazy – teksty i drzeworyty. Autorka analizuje role, które przeznaczono im w budowie dzieła (i drukowanej książki), oraz zastanawia się nad sposobami ich wykorzystania do stworzenia sortilegium. W tekście zwrócono także uwagę na tradycję symboliczną i dziedzictwo średniowiecznej alegorezy, które wyzyskane zostały w książce do wróżb. Analizując ikonografię drzeworytów Fortuny… i strukturę drukowanego tomu, podjęto także próbę usytuowania Fortuny… wobec nowożytnej emblematyki i emblematycznej mentalności, które przejawiły się w pracy Stanisława z Bochnie.

The central part of the article is an edition of two letters written by Tomasz Treter to the Bishop of Warmia, Szymon Rudnicki. These letters are noteworthy as a contribution to the history of the book in Warmia, because these letters are Treter’s intercession on behalf of booksellers and bookbinders from Braniewo. The letters reveal the behind-the-scenes mechanisms of regulating the book trade in Warmia; they show that in this region the interests of local booksellers and merchants coming from larger centres clashed; they mention the types of publications whose sale was most profitable.

Najważniejszą część artykułu stanowi edycja dwóch listów napisanych przez Tomasza Tretera do biskupa warmińskiego Szymona Rudnickiego. Listy te są godne uwagi jako przyczynek do dziejów książki na Warmii, Treter wstawiał się w nich bowiem za księgarzami i introligatorami z Braniewa. Listy ujawniają zakulisowe mechanizmy regulacji handlu książką na Warmii, pokazują, że ścierały się na tych terenach interesy miejscowych księgarzy i kupców przybywających z większych ośrodków, wspominają też rodzaje książek, o handel którymi konkurowano.
