The paper is dedicated to the analysis of three volumes of soldiers’ memoire prose: Krótki życiorys pewnego żołnierza z wojny europejskiej Zapiski domowe by Karol Omyła, Kraków 2019, Wspomnienia by Bogumił Nowotny, Gdańsk 2006, and Wspomnienia wojenne lotnika. Ze wspomnień polskiego lotnika w armii austro-węgierskiej na podniebnych frontach I wojny światowej by Wiktor Willmann, Warszawa – Kraków 2014. These works make it possible to learn about three types of military service, according to the weapon used: infantry, navy and aviation. An asset of Krótki życiorys… is also the language, which represents a dialect typical of Żywiec region with some elements of soldiers’ jargon, which was used in c. and k. regiments, with a majority of Polish soldiers. While reading, the author used the research methodology developed by Paweł Rodak, which includes performativity of a diary, whose features are shared by all the other volumes, except for Wspomnienia… by Willmann. Also, examples of soldiers’ personal document prose were read as literary testimony (following Maria Delaperrière). Hence, considerations into subjectivity, historical truth and the levels of ‘literariness’ of the story about Polish participation in the Great War, parallel to the politically designed legion perspective.

Omówione trzy tomy żołnierskiej prozy wspomnieniowej: Karola Omyły Krótki życiorys pewnego żołnierza z wojny europejskiej. Zapiski domowe (Kraków 2019), Bogumiła Nowotnego Wspomnienia (Gdańsk 2006) i Wiktora Willmanna Wspomnienia wojenne lotnika. Ze wspomnień polskiego lotnika w armii austro-węgierskiej na podniebnych frontach I wojny światowej (Warszawa – Kraków 2014), pozwalają poznać specyfikę służby w trzech rodzajach broni: w piechocie, marynarce wojennej oraz w lotnictwie. Walorem Krótkiego życiorysu… jest ponadto język, reprezentujący gwarę swoistą Żywiecczyźnie z elementami gwary żołnierskiej, którą posługiwano się w c. i k. regimentach z przewagą żołnierzy narodowości polskiej. Zastosowanie podczas lektury metodologii badań opracowanej przez Pawła Rodaka, uwzględniającej performatywność dziennika, którego cechy – z wyjątkiem Wspomnień… Willmanna – wykazują pozostałe tomy, oraz odczytanie za Marią Delaperrière przywołanych tu przykładów żołnierskiej prozy dokumentu osobistego jako świadectw literackich sprzyja rozważaniom nad podmiotowością, prawdą historyczną i poziomami „literackości” opowieści o udziale Polaków w Wielkiej Wojnie poza politycznie projektowaną perspektywą legionową.

The view of Europe betweeen 19th and 20th centuries was shaped mainly by militarism. It is confirmed by the works of Michael Howard, Ian F.W. Beckett, Martin van Creveld, and also material culture, which is the heritage of those times. Architecture, technology, as well assculptures and paintings created shortly before the First World War are an illustration of how Polish literature reacted to the conflict of 1914–1918. In Tadeusz Kudliński’s novel Smak świata, where the main character is an officer of the Austro-Hungarian artillery, the world is dominated by machines: railway, telephone etc. According to Bjonar Olsen, those things represent material culture in the view of Tim Dant, allowing the main character to keep his identity. The collection of essays Młodości mej stolica. Wspomnienia krakowianina między wojnami provide the reader with a historical view of the war in the Carpathian Mountains and on the Italian front.
