The present paper examines the Sunday troparia of the Byzantine-Slavic liturgical tradition as performed nowadays in Slovakia. The research, which took into the consideration their history, text, and music, tries to determine original forms of the music, as close as possible to the originals lost by 17th-18th centuries, and points to the possibilities of selecting the proper textual variants.

The Archbishop of Polotsk Josaphat Kuncevič supposedly supervised over the editorial work on the liturgicon published in Vilnius in 1617, although the references suggesting this do not appear very persuasive. Such a reference, however, cannot be neglected and a survey of the sources is consequently necessary. The present paper demonstrates the extent of Josaphat’s reforming efforts in the liturgical ritual, based on three documents of his authorship, the Catechismus, the Regulae, and the Constitutiones. The liturgicon Vilnius of 1617 has also been examined. A comparison of Jospahat’s intentions published in his documents with the liturgicon Vilnius 1617 supposedly co-edited by him, resulted in the following conclusions: 1) Josphat’s intention was not to reform any liturgical ritual; the opposite is true – he was interested in maintaining the rite untouched and pure in its form; 2) It is impossible to prove that Josaphat was or was not co-editor of the liturgicon Vilnius of 1617; 3) If he was a co-editor, the rubrics of the liturgicon are too austere to prove Josaphat’s ideas to be included in it (with an exception of one).

Chorus angelorum. Uno sguardo alla partecipazione attiva dell’assemblea liturgica e alla funzionalità del coro. I cori, cioè gruppi di persone che cantano e che si assumono la funzione di rispondere alla celebrazione liturgica, sono presenti nella Chiesa fin dai tempi più antichi. Tuttavia, il loro ruolo, che a volte è stato una necessità, non di rado è visto, soprattutto nei tempi moderni, come un ostacolo alla partecipazione attiva del popolo al culto. Questo articolo, quindi, affronta la questione, esaminando la definizione e il ruolo del coro nella liturgia come descritto nei vari libri della Bibbia e come definito dai documenti del Concilio Vaticano II. Inoltre, analizza i vari aspetti positivi che il coro offre non solo all’esterno, ma anche all’interno dei suoi membri.

The issue of the active participation of the liturgical assembly in worship is a question to which it is difficult to find a satisfactory answer. The choir plays a key role in this problem. While some see its performance as enriching and enhancing the solemnity of the service, others see it as a hindrance or even a limitation to the active participation of the people. Certain indications are offered by the documents of the Second Vatican Council, but these cannot be applied unreservedly to another tradition, in the case of Slovakia and the Byzantine tradition. This study thus attempts to gain insight into this issue, offering some facts that speak mainly in favor of the participation of the choir, but at the same time confirming that the activity of the choir does not prevent the full and active participation of the people in the liturgy.

Chóry, czyli grupy osób, które wykonują śpiewy i wypełniają zadanie odpowiadania na wezwania celebransa podczas liturgii, są obecne w Kościele od najdawniejszych czasów. Jednakże ich rola, która często okazuje się niezbędna, współcześnie jest niejednokrotnie postrzegana jako przeszkoda w aktywnym udziale wiernych w liturgii. Artykuł niniejszy podejmuje ten problem, analizując i definiując rolę chóru w liturgii na podstawie danych biblijnych i dokumentów Soboru Watykańskiego II. Ponadto ukazuje wiele pozytywnych aspektów funkcji chóru, które dotyczą nie tylko całości zgromadzenia liturgicznego, ale także członków samego chóru.
