The article analyzes the trends of higher education in Australia. The main factors that influenced the reforming of higher education are determined. The basic stages and directions of modernization are characterized. The basic changes that have been made in the educational system of the country after the reform are revealed. In order to ensure the competitiveness of higher education in the global education market, the country improved organization of the educational system. Today it is a country which occupies a leading position in the world ranking assessing the quality of education. The university education evolved from the formation of a binary system of education to introduce unified national system of higher education that marked improvement of the research universities. One of the major trends in the reform of higher education in Australia is the rate of export of educational services, contributing to the modernization of higher education institutions and higher education throughout the country. It is stressed that the main purpose of Australian higher education institutions is to increase the level of qualifications, support and updating of qualified professionals thanks to the close cooperation of educational institutions with a professional environment. This helps to assess the prospects in the field of education, to improve the performance and availability of services, promotes employment of graduates.
