This article examines the precedential statements used by journalists as the headlines of articles and notes in the oldest Russian magazine «Ogonek» («Spark») (15 randomly selected magazine issues for the year 2012) in terms of their origin and structural transformations. There have been distinguished eight thematic groups of the precedential statements that belong to a common cognitive basis of the Russian native speakers: proverbs and sayings, titles of literary works and literary quotes, idioms, movie titles and quotes from movies, phraseological expressions, the song titles and lyrics quotes, the Soviet period slogans and the Bible quotes. From the perspective of their structure, the analysed headings are distributed according to the degree of transformation of the original text of the precedential statements: the text unchanged, truncation or replacement of the components, the expansion of a precedential statement.
