The paper is focused on the issue of learning styles in the context of newly emerging needs of children in the school environment. It analyzes various approaches to characterization and classification of learning styles. Correct and early diagnosis of the predominant learning styles helps teachers in the teaching and starting learning processes of students. It is a current requirement of the current teaching and call for the development of specific diagnostic competence of each teacher already in undergraduate training, but also in the system of continuous education.

In this paper we present the opportunities and obstacles of implementation of holistic sexuality edu- cation in the group of mentally handicapped children and adults in Slovakia. We describe the example of good practice of sexuality education in one special school on the background of survey results of educational needs of Slovak teachers in this education area (N = 95 participating schools). The results illustrate the persistent lack of understanding of sex education, but also of adequate education of teachers working with healthy and disabled children.

The paper presents partial results of the research identifying demands on the performance of professional competences in the school practice in teachers1 with various length of practice and in student teachers. Results are compared with the findings and results of the national report in the OECD international report TALIS 2008.
