Words with international components that serve as terms are concerned in the article. International components may be used both at the beginning of the words and in the end or have binary position in diff erent words. The collected material shows that the function of pre positive and postpositive term elements is diff erent. At the beginning of the word, a component may defi ne the sphere of its application or a certain branch of science, so the postpositive component clearly points out the specifi c group of terms. The words with such international components came into Ukrainian language by different ways: borrowed from Romance and Germanic languages, west slavonic particularly from Polish and could get into our language through Polish or Russian. Today Greek-Latin elements have become building blocks for creating new words in these languages that never happened before. The article deals with the terms including pre positive and postpositive –fon - component. The written out words from explanatory dictionaries edited in diff erent years and published in Ukraine since 1906 made it possible to trace the dynamics of appearance such words in Ukrainian language, identify effi ciency / ineffi ciency of term elements.
