Założyli we wsi MusikMuseum i organizują festiwal rozrywki – Harhovské čudá a zábaviská (Cuda i zabawy Harhova). Festiwal reprezentuje tradycje rękodzielnicze w wiosce oraz ciekawe poczucie humoru i hiperbolizm Spiša/Hrhova.

The study deals with chosen examples of various activities (their positives and negatives) from the cultural area according to cultural heritage perspectives in Spišský Hrhov – the village of the year 2015. From the point of view of the endogenous sociocultural resources, the local leaders did their best to preserve the traditions of the local handicrafts. They have established the MusikMuseum in the village and they organize a festival of entertainment – Harhovske čuda a zabaviska (Harhov’s curiosities and funs). The festival represents the handicraft traditions in the village and a peculiar sense of humour and hyperbolism of Spiš/Hrhov.

The sustainable development concept has been detailed in several strategic documents which, among other things, point out that it is a complex issue and should be explored at the inter-disciplinary level. Examples of the current ethnological research of cities concerning transformations of post-socialist urban spaces in the context of civic initiatives and participative planning and participative budget demonstrate the possibilities of ethnology in applying the sustainable development principles in an urban environment.

The city of Banska Stiavnica and technical monuments in its vicinity were in year 1993 registered in the List of the World Cultural Heritage UNESCO (the mining region). The Salamander Parade in Banska Stiavnica as part of intangible cultural heritage of Slovakia represents specific and unique cultural traditions of miners that had formed during 150 years of existence of the Academy of Mining in Banská Stiavnica, during the following 80 years of active mining, and moreover, during 20 years following its finishing in 1993. The “Ausus” tradition nominated by the mining association Herrengrund is located in the mining settlement of Spania Dolina.

The study deals with the current state of research of intangible cultural heritage phenomena in the context of the Banská Bystrica region, and highlights the rising number of recently restored and publicly presented socio-cultural phenomena of traditional culture. We examine two closely related areas that exemplify the issues at hand: the current state of traditional folk culture in its geographical context (i.e. the Banská Bystrica region) and the institutional structure of the regional government. They also constitute the basic determining factors that define not only the potential contents of the phenomena and processes of traditional culture as a basis for presentations, but also their form. They are not identical all throughout Slovak regions; some regions preserve cultural traditions to a larger extent, others do so to a lesser extent; in some regions, the concentration of monuments is higher and the same is true of museums, particularly museums of natural sciences. An overview of regular and recent activities taking place in the region of Banská Bystrica provides answers to questions concerning quantity and diversity of folk culture and highlights positive and negative aspects of these types of presenting cultural heritage phenomena.

Cultural and art heritage of Slovakia has been since 2007 one of the priorities in research and development. As a consequence of growing globalization and acculturation there is a real danger of the loss of traditional cultural values. That is why it is crucial to pay special attention to the research of cultural and art heritage. Application of knowledge on cultural heritage in the educational process is highly important because the level of national and ethnic identity and pride of young generation is not connected with cultural and art traditions of Slovakia.
