This article remembers the life and activity of Cezary Biernacki (1827-1896), a historian of Kalisz and surrounding region, who played his part in some important works of the 19th century: Orgelbrand Universal Encyclopaedia and The Geographic Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and other Slav countries. The topics of consideration are also the bibliography works and publishing activity of Biernacki and his bibliophile passion and the history of his library.

The journal “Kaliszanin” issued in Kalisz in 1870–1892 published central and local government decrees, information about the city and its neighborhood, historical articles, theatre reviews, political, economic and cultural news, literature, reports on the activity of social organizations, letters from readers, and correspondence from the country and from abroad. This article reviews the correspondence sent from Szadek to the journal, which provides an interesting source of information about the town and the surrounding area in the second half of 19th century.

The article presents the biography of Gabriel of Szadek and his work Apologia pro Collegii Posnaniensis, de Trino et Uno Deo assertionibus, adversus Samosatenicorum Anabaptistarum animadversions (1583), which was written in response to Poznan Jesuits’ pronouncement against SZymon Budny on the matter of Holy Trinity. The author also reminds the circumstances in which this work was printed and its further history.

The topic of the paper are the contests of a document, titled ”Guidelines for arranging and conducting non-formal education” and activities based on it which were conducted in Kalisz and Turek district. The paper presents the works of education authorities which were led in the interwar period in a more or less spontaneous way and sets some rules of non-formal educational work, as one of the most important fragments of Polish education within this time period. Big emphasis was placed on the activities of libraries which were an essential element of supporting non-formal education. The author of the work describes the forms and methods of the library work for the non-formal education, showing the less known side of the library and educational activities, conducted by the newly-reborn Polish state.

This article discusses letters written by Zygmunt Celichowski to Alfons Parczewski. The letters are currently held in the Lithuanian Archives of Old Records in Vilnius. The letters concern the social activity performed by both the author and the recipient.
