The author discusses the history of the project for the rehabilitation and adaptation of two tenement houses at Straganiarska street in Gdańsk - tenement house no 18, of which only foundations have been left and no 19, referred to as Mrongowiusz's House (between 1812 and 1855 K.C. Mrongowiusz taught Polish there). The plan for the rehabilitation and adaptation of the houses was drawn by the Atelier for the Conservation of Monuments, branch office in Gdańsk, in 1979—1981. Such a long period of design work was the result of numerous discusions and controversies as to the form of the reconstruction and conservation of the two structures. The biggest controversy arose with regard to architectonic reconstruction of the house no 18. The version that has been finally accepted and realized is almost exactly the same as the project proposed in 1977 and not approved then. The reconstruction of the two tenement houses was completed in 1983.
